But if the repair will cost more than about half of what a new printer would cost, you may want to consider purchasing a new one. | I haven't used my inkjet printer for several weeks. It was working fine, but now it just goes through the motions like it is printing, but nothing comes out on the paper. What is wrong? |
- The liquid ink in the cartridge may have dried on the nozzles. You should run several cleaning cycles as described in your user manual. If this fails, replace the cartridge. If it still fails to print, you need to bring the printer in for service.

| I print a lot, and lately the printer has been leaving streaks on the paper. I've tried cleaning it like the manual says, but it still streaks. What else can I do? |
- Streaks are usually caused by a buildup of ink on the moving parts. If it still streaks after cleaning, the buildup is probably in areas inaccessible to the user. We need to remove some parts to get to the buildup. Some older dot matrix printers will leave streaks when using generic ribbons. Cleaning won't help these printers at all. Laser printers will exhibit various print quality problems when they need professional service and cleaning. In most cases, if you have tried the fixes suggested in your owner's manual, and the problem persists, it is best to bring the printer in for service.

| My printer was working OK, but now when I try to print a document, it prints nonsense characters. I haven't changed anything in the computer or on the printer. What could be wrong? |
- Turn the printer off. Save your work and exit all programs. Shutdown your computer. Remove the printer cable from the printer and from the computer. Reattach the cable and turn everything back on again. If the problem is still there, reinstall the printer driver and make sure the correct printer is selected in your application. If it still fails, we need to look at BOTH the printer and your computer.
